In recent day politics in Nigeria, the power tussle between political ‘Godson’ & ‘Godfather’ seems not to have an end any time soon. One can easily recall what transpired between Goodluck Jonathan & Olusegun Obasanjo, during 2015 general election, others also include: Akiwumi Ambode vs Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of Lagos state and now Godwin Obaseki vs Adams Oshiomole of Edo state.
In this context, every outgoing leader choose a replacement that suits his or her interest and present the candidate to their political party thereby ensuring the candidate emerge as the flag bearer of the party and possibly win the general election. The interest owned by the outgoing leader maybe of good or bad but when it contradicts the interest of the political ‘Godson’ and the general public, crisis emanates afterwards.
What exactly is amiss between Governor Godwin Obaseki and the APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomole?
Governor Obaseki revealed that his refusal to open Edo State treasury to some persons who claimed they brought him to office was the origin of the crisis between the governor and the APC national Chairman. After several denials by Oshiomole with claims that things were fine between him and the governor, he finally admitted that things have gone the wrong path between them but claimed that the refusal of Governor Obaseki to open the state assembly after several attempt was the major reason why they both fell apart.
Oshiomole played an important role for the emergence of Godwin Obaseki as Governor of Edo State in 2016. Yes in Politics & in every human endeavour, someone provides opportunity or leverage for another person to succeed in a venture. But where such leverage or help comes with interior overriding interest that supersedes the general good, there is bound to be crisis.
Governor Obaseki was the ‘right-hand’ man of Oshiomole during his tenure from 2008 to 2016. In a recent interview with the current Governor of Edo State, Obaseki revealed that he provided financial support to Oshiomole in 2008 during his political campaign that made him the governor that same year.
The situation got out of control between the two when they were both attacked by thugs in different occasions within Edo State and both subject pointed accusing fingers to each other as the source of the attack. There was a lot of chaos within Edo state as a result of this and Governor Obaseki even threatened to send Oshiomole out of the state if he doesn’t observe caution.
Governor Obaseki is first considered a technocrat before being a politician and has made remarkable progress on developing the economy of Edo state and since governance is service to all people, one would say that the governor deserves to win second term but politics is characterized by impurities with clash of interest especially by the elite politicians and the choice of the masses ends up not scaling through the process.
Edo State election holds by September 2020 and it’s clear that Oshiomole does not want his formal ‘Godson’ back to the office of the governor and he’s not pretending about it, even though the-two are in the same party. Oshiomole declared that APC will adopt direct primaries for the forth-coming primary election in the state against the wish of Governor Obaseki who would have preferred indirect primaries for the state. Source has it that the caucus of Oshiomole is supporting Osagie Ize Iyamu to emerge victorious from the primaries and possibly become the flag bearer of APC in the forth coming election. The battle line has been drawn, many are of the opinion that what happened in Lagos between Ambode vs Tinubu is not obtainable in Edo state but the fact that Governor Obaseki had to even defy interstate lockdown order to visit Tinubu in Lagos state to beg for forgiveness even when he’s not sure if he offended the party leader makes the mockery of the whole thing. Tinubu is in-support of Oshiomole to conduct direct primaries and the message is clear.
Many are of the view that Governor Obaseki should plead for forgiveness from Oshiomole so as to win- back his support, but will Oshiomole accept if Obaseki offer to do that? No, I don’t think so because Ambode failed when he did same to Tinubu and as such, the Governor should stand firm and face the game with the right strategy regardless of the influence the national chairman will have on the primaries. Who wins this battle? time shall tell, but whatever that happens afterwards, there will be lesson to learn from this.
